2/16/2018 0 Comments HISTORY Through Our Eyes! What does Black History convey to you? We all share an invaluable historical journey and it's beautiful to learn and uncover, hidden truths that build a healthier self-image. Whatever your field of work or what you aspire to achieve, someone in your bloodlines, lost their lives and loved-ones, worked long strenuous hours, sick, depressed, fearful yet courageous, sacrificing pleasurable moments to bring reality to a path of greatness, you must learn to carry forth. And only if you embrace, envision and accept the huge challenge to commit, regardless of the sleep less nights, frustrations of growing pains, unforeseen twists and turns that are sure to show up. Will you fully commit to take to experience history through your own eyes? As a researcher, I love to pursue secrets, and untold history in my family. My Dad, Mr. Louis Dukes was a advent reader, super great father, who always had another new book for us to read and discuss. Of course as a child reading in the summer was a huge challenge, when other children were out playing. Nonetheless, eating dinner together, vacationing for the summer, reading and math and playtime were daily priorities. As a week-known business owner of Dukes & Sons Construction company, my Dad taught me, personally to type contracts, around age of 8. My brothers worked in the family company and one of my older sister's was a genius at bookkeeping. Sad to say she is gone now. But Rochelle leaves us a legacy of love, hard work and quotes like, "Keep doing your best and then do your best some more, it will pay off some day," and "Use Your Creativity, It' Keeps Expanding." Wow do I miss them, so much, yet truly grateful for the time we shared together on earth. One thing for sure, history, lives when you and I, to share it with others. Some of Dad's quotes My oldest brother, and I constantly talk about our family history and have learned to apply some of Dad's favorite quotes, such as, "Never let another ones ignorance, cause you to lower your standards." This quote alone has disciplined me, to control my emotions, and not respond negatively in many extreme pressured situations. Today, I thought and chuckled about the last book our Father insisted that we read, and he brought each of us one, "See You At The Top," by Zig Ziglar. He actually brought copies and either delivered by hand or via mail to all six of us. I can not tell you, how grateful I am now, that my Dad, was so adamant about his children, living the best life ever with a strong mural fiber. And our wonderful Mother who supported his vision and is still our backbone of love, today. Now we, give her the best care! So as we deliberately celebrate Black History Month and Lifestyles, remember to honor respect and appreciate your parents wisdom and sacrifices, always! Our children need to understand history and importance of My Father, Mr. Dukes had the pleasure of renovating, Paul Robeson's home in 1970. Mr. Robeson was an African American considered as the epitome of the 20th-Century Renaissance man. An attorney, exceptional athlete, political activist, singer and actor. Lastly, my Dad would say, "A Good Character is Everything," and "You Are Only As Good As Your Word." When I miss him, there are several places I can visit that he built and still remain to this day. Let your history leave an imprint on our youth! Michael Jordan says, "My best skill is I was coachable, I was a like a sponge and aggressive to learn." Who is the cut-throat YOU or THEM? That is the daily quest! . . . .Are you personally experiencing the vicious cycles of unprofessional, bad- spirited, low- down and dirty, uncaring, unkind, callous, hard-nosed, unpleasant for no apparent reasons, managers, team leaders and/or co-workers in the workplace space. If it's family then that is another blog post for the future. Well, sad to say, but welcome to the normal culture of many companies daily mode of ineffective operation. Unpleasant attitudes and unnecessary sabotage is happening all around us. Yes, too many companies bet on having a cut-throat, high-pressure, take-no-prisoners culture to drive their financial success. But a large and growing body of research on positive organizational psychology demonstrates that not only is a cut-throat environment harmful to productivity over time, but that a positive environment will lead to dramatic benefits for employers, employees, and the bottom line. Although there’s an assumption that stress and pressure push employees to perform more, better, and faster, what cut-throat organizations fail to recognize is the hidden costs incurred. First, health care expenditures at high-pressure companies are nearly 50% greater than at other organizations. The American Psychological Association estimates that more than $500 billion is siphoned off from the U.S. economy because of workplace stress, and 550 million workdays are lost each year due to stress on the job. Sixty percent to 80% of workplace accidents are attributed to stress, and it’s estimated that more than 80% of doctor visits are due to stress. Workplace stress has been linked to health problems ranging from metabolic syndrome to cardiovascular disease and mortality. The stress of belonging to hierarchies itself is linked to disease and death. One study showed that, the lower someone’s rank in a hierarchy, the higher their chances of cardiovascular disease and death from heart attacks. In a large-scale study of over 3,000 employees conducted by Anna Nyberg at the Karolinska Institute, results showed a strong link between leadership behavior and heart disease in employees. Stress-producing bosses are literally bad for the heart. Health and well-being is jeopardize and chronic trauma shorten the quality of life and overall wellness. REMEMBER THIS: "Cutting off the nose to spite the face" is an expression to describe a needlessly self-destructive over-reaction to a problem: "Don't cut off your nose to spite your face" is a warning against acting out of pique, or against pursuing revenge in a way that would damage oneself more than the object of one's anger. As unfair as this may seem, when you experience life's challenges, you learn it truth. Don't drink the poison, too! Redirect your focus on positivity, inner calmness, good emotional balance, happiness and over well-being! A Surprisingly Helpful Manager or Mentor Have you ever had a manager or mentor who took a lot of trouble to help you when he or she did not have to? Chances are you have became loyal and it remained to that person to this day. Jonathan Haidt at New York University’s Stern School of Business shows in his research, that when leaders are not just fair but self-sacrificing, their employees are actually moved and inspired to become more loyal and committed themselves. As a consequence, they are more likely to go out of their way to be helpful and friendly to other employees, thus creating a self-reinforcing cycle. How important is it too have a pleasantly productive work environment? Daan Van Knippenberg of Rotterdam School of Management shows that employees of self-sacrificing leaders are more cooperative because they trust their leaders more. They are also more productive and see their leaders as more effective and charismatic. What is your view on self-sacrificing leaders, is this important or not? Let's us hear your viewpoints, leave comments below. As a manager, leader, team lead, mentor now is your opportunity to correct the wrongs and stop the losses. Enough love? Enough laughter? Enough money? Enough inner calm? At first glance, we might be tempted to say, no—those positive things can never be truly fulfilled or completed to the point where we would say, “enough.” But if we reflect more deeply, we can imagine important boundaries that each one of those calls for in a positive, meaningful life. Believing we can be loved “enough” means trusting the loves in our lives, rather than always feeling the need to dissect, chase or question it. Laughing with deep, authentic joy is neither possible nor helpful to do all the time. Without “enough” laughter, we’d crowd out our other emotions, including the smiles that come from quiet joy, more than giggles or loud outburst. While we all strive to better ourselves financially, finding contentment in the resources we have is an important part of living positively grateful. If you still question the idea of “enough” money, just ask lottery winners, whose windfalls are found in multiple scientific studies not to affect overall senses of well-being. Because they did not learn to manage money and therefore it yielded more burdens and deeper depression for many. Cultivating calm is a lifelong pursuit, but if we never feel calm “enough,” we will never find the motivation to act, to move or to assert ourselves in ways that free us to explore new possibilities for our lives. Today, strikes me as the perfect opportunity to reflect on the balance between “gratefulness” and “enough,” both in the contexts of the delicious Thanksgiving foods that we look forward to all year long and the emotional surge many of us experience during the holiday season. As we move quickly into 2018, let’s remember to be grateful for the gift of living, but also for the deep peace that comes from knowing how to experience the feeling of being satisfied—knowing how and when to say “enough.” If your still missing that PEACE you desire in your life, keep reading!
